Access to the IBM Regatta at the Rechenzentrum Garching of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft

Obtaining Access to the IBM Systems at the Rechenzentrum Garching of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft

Within an exchange agreement for computing time between LRZ and the Rechenzentrum Garching of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (RZG), users of  HLRB-II may use the RZG's High Performance Computing Installations. In principle, applying for usage of the IBM is easy: A simplified version of the application procedure for computing time on the HLRB is required.

How to obtain access

  • If you have not yet done so, apply for a project on HLRB. If you wish to obtain access only to the IBM , not to HLRB-II
    • you do not need to fill out part 3 of the form, Technical Description and
    • you do not need to give any details in part 4 of the form, except that
    • you should specify at item 4.4 "Other References and Comments" that you apply for obtaining access to the IBM.
    Within a few days, you will receive an email with information on your new HLRB test project, its project ID, and the HLRB-II accounts.
  • Fill in the PDF application form to use the computers at the RZG as soon as you know your HLRB-II project ID.
    • Please specify your HLRB-II project ID, the HLRB-II project title, and the words "IBM" in the field "Besondere Anforderungen" or "Special Requests", respectively.
    • You do not need to specify a User-ID. This will be assigned by the Rechenzentrum Garching.
    • Please, specify your start password.
    • Do not sign as the "Projektleiter" or "project manager". This will be done by LRZ personnel.
    • Sign the application form: sign the part "Vom Antragsteller auszufüllen" or "Memorandum of Understanding ".
    • Fax the filled and signed form to (089) 35831-8657 at the LRZ. Do not send the form to the Rechenzentrum Garching of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft. This will be done by LRZ personnel.
    • Repeat this process for every researcher in your project, who should have an account on the IBM Regatta. Every researcher is obliged to sign the part "Vom Antragsteller auszufüllen" or "Memorandum of Understanding ".

After submission to LRZ, your application will be processed as follows:

  • After checking the project number,it will be sent to the "Benutzerberatung des RZG".
  • LRZ will also specify, whether the account should be for a production user (group id lrzp), the technical staff of the LRZ (Munich) or the RRZE (Erlangen) (group id lrzs).
  • Finally, we will inform you about your account(s) on the IBM at the Rechenzentrum Garching of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft.
