The Bayerische Staatssammlung fuer Palaeontologie und Geologie is a research institution that forms part of the Bavarian Natural History Collections. As a centre for documentation, research and education it focuses on the palaeontological and geological history of life and Earth. Furthermore, it is the contact institution for fossil finds in Bavaria. The Staatssammlung is also in charge of excavating and safeguarding fossils, rocks, ore and minerals from Germany and abroad. The Geology section focuses on general, regional, and economic geology. Parts of the research results are presented to the scientific community and to the general public through two scientific journals and special exhibitions at the two museums of the Staatssammlung: the "Palaeontologisches Museum Muenchen" (Palaeontological Museum Munich) and the "Geologisches Museum Muenchen" (Geological Museum Munich).
